On our way

The day finally arrived, January 11th. 1/11/11. Or where we are headed 11/1/11. I did a newsletter article on the vibe I get about January 1, so it is kinda cool we depart on a day full of ones. One is the first number of the series, and anything worth counting starts with the number 1. Perhaps more on that later...

We are to depart out of Orlando at 2:00 PM, though on the way--checking for delays--we discover they have pushed the flight up to 1:38 departure. We aredoing okay on time, we arrive at the airport at 12:30. It cost’s us $85 for the baggage, and that is only up to New York. A word from experience--if you are price shopping do not use a website called Vayama. We’ve really not had a good time with them.

My Beloved--the World Traveler
We drop the bags and check in on the curb (72 degrees in January, you gotta love it) and get through security  pretty quickly. The flight is departing early to beat a snowstorm that is forecast, but we get a favorable tailwind and arrive 45 minutes before our original stated arrival time. Welcome to New York. We deplane and must collect our baggage and get to the Aeroflot (Russian Airline) and check in. Everything goes smoothly, then through security, again. We check in and get to the gate, then enjoy a $9.00 sandwich before boarding the long over-the-ocean flight.

We are flying an Airbus A330-200. Beloved is toting a bag that is turning heads all the way down the boarding ramp, “No no, it’ll fit fine--I’ve done it before,” she says with a smile. Guess what--it does. You wouldn’t beleieve it to look at it though! 5000 miles and 7 hours later we are in Moscow, Russia after wathcing a couple movies (I really enjoyed MegaMind) and a couple pretty decent meals. Since we are in the back of the airplane and there seems to be three-thousand people on this flight, and since we have a seven hour layover in Moscow, we take our time getting off the airplane and into the terminal.

our bags have been checked all the way to Baku, so we don’t have to deal with them, but guess waht? We have to go through security one more time! Three transfers, three times through the metal detectors. By the way, Russia has some of the rudest staff I’ve seen in a while--isn’t it lovely to be back in Europe...

We have completed most of our time here in Moscow, the next post will be from the nation of Azerbaijan...
